The biological meaning of an adult animal or human is a person who has matured. When used with humans, the word adult may mean something connected to social or legal notions. Contrary to those who are that isn't considered an adult, or "minor", the legal adult has reached majority making them self-sufficient competent, responsible, and capable. The term "major" can be applied to them. The point at which a person becomes an adult legally is 18 years old, however the definition of legal maturity is different based on the legal or country system, as well as their psychological state.

At the point that a person reaches physical and intellectual maturity this is known as adulthood. Adulthood, as generally understood, begins at the age of either 20 or 21. After middle age (starting about 40 years old), comes older age (around age 60). Young adulthood starts between age of 18 to 30. Middle adulthood occurs from the mid-30s through to 60s. Late adulthood starts at mid-60s. In the early years of adulthood we have reached its physical maturity to the maximum. However, our size and weight may rise. As we enter our early adulthood the physical capabilities of our bodies are at their highest such as the strength of our muscles, our reaction speed sensors, as well as cardiac functioning.
